  • High Blood Pressure question.

When I exercise, does my blood pressure increase?

II know my heart rate increases, but what about blood pressure?

My blood pressure is 112/67 in the morning 142/85 at night, but under effort its like 170/100...Is that normal?

My heart beat stays at a nice 65 to 70 beats per minute.

When you exercise, especially lifting weights, your blood pressure rises.

Ok, then there is something I dont get.

High blood pressure cause strokes, but not to get a stroke, the doctors recommend exercise....

The reason I am asking this is that I just follow a safety course for the CSST which was mandatory. I learn how to "save" people from injuries, heart failures and such.

I learned in that class that strockes now most often to poeple aged around 35 years old...Is that true?

        I am 30 years old

If you have high blood pressure, and do heavy weights, it will go higher and you can get a stroke. It is definitely not recommended to exercise while your blood pressure is very high.

However, doing some light exercise (even walking) can often be done. Also, they give you medication to lower your blood pressure, while on the medication you can exercise.

And of course, it does depend somewhat on what exercise you are doing. Weights increase your blood pressure a lot. Cardio raises it hardly at all (and should only be avoided if you are in danger of a stroke).

And exercise does lower blood pressure. I am no longer on blood pressure medication, and a large part of that is exercise (also diet and weightloss).

You had high blood pressure? Why was that?

How did you find out? How old are you? And what was your pressure at?

            Sorry for all the Qs.

They aren't really sure, yeah, mine was 170+/120 for a while, before medication. Even after medication if I didn't treat myself right (not taking the medication or drinking too much) it would increase to high levels.

I wasn't feeling well, and was trying to decide between going into the doctor or going to the gym. I went to the doctor, and that probably saved me from a stroke (one example I think of of God looking out for me).

              I was 23, I am now 27.

130/85 is the high end of normal. If you go above that, to say 140/95 it isn't dangerous, but is bad for you. Over 150/100 and doctors generally start wanting things to change.

Blood pressure under 180/120 should be fine while exercising (though if your standing BP is 180/120 you probably should see a doctor...) If I recall correctly, standing BP of 120/80 is considered normal for an adult male of 25, and it goes up from there; so yours sounds reasonable, Spec.

Exercising is good for preventing strokes (though not when about to have one...) because it limbers up the blood vessels and the heart, making the heart work more efficiently and the arteries more flexible (thus lowering BP overall).

140/90 is borderline. Above that, it should be taken care of.

                  JM, wtf!! At 23!? Wow.

What is considered drinking a lot?

I still am vegeterrian. I now eat lots of veggies isntead of being a pastaterrian though. Being a vegeterrian doesn't make you healthy (or not heathly), it depends on what you eat.

I also think that for me (maybe not for everyrone), caffiene has a large effect (also, as already mentioned, exercise).

I would drink 10+ drinks quite often.

I am pretty sure that I have to be more careful than most people, as I think I have a high ammount of intrinsic hypertension.

Also, at the time I was stressed about a lot of things.
