US daily oil production is higher then Canada and Mexico combined.
Difference is Canada and Mexico are net exporters, while you Yankees are the major suck on the global economy.

You're the black hole of consumerism and now some idiots think that Canadian and Mexican resources might bank roll yet more profligacy.

    Dream on.

The US government has not endorsed the Amero though it was thought up by a Canadian conservative named Herbert G. Grubel in 1999 and formerly proposed by Mexico's President in 2000.

In 2005 The Presidents of the US & Mexico along with the PM of Canada signed a document entitled "Building a North American Community" which agreed on steps the three countries would take in order to make a future currency union more possible. Rightwingers in the US were up in arms at the time though the agreement most certainly did not create the Amero. It did do some rather good work harmonizing the financial sectors of the three countries and in accordance with the agreement Mexico opened up its banking sector to foreign banks for the first time since the 1930's.

Herbert G. (Herb) Grubel (born February 26, 1934 in Frankfurt, Germany) is a former Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Capilano—Howe Sound in the Canadian House of Commons from 1993 to 1997.

As a member of the Reform Party, Grubel defeated former federal cabinet minister Mary Collins in the 1993 election. He served as the party's finance critic from 1995 to 1997, and was controversial for his outspoken support of Canada moving toward a flat tax system.

He also caused controversy by comparing Canada's First Nations to "spoiled children living in South Sea island resorts". Grubel argued that he was simply commenting on the similar social problems faced by First Nations people and South Sea islanders.

Grubel did not run in the 1997 election. As of 2005 he is professor emeritus of economics at Simon Fraser University and senior fellow of the Fraser Institute. He has also worked at the economic faculties of Yale, Stanford, the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania.

While at the Fraser Institute Herbert published a paper titled: "The Case for the Amero: The Economics and Politics of a North American Monetary Union" [1], in which he proposed that Canada and the USA adopt a shared currency called the 'amero'.

Not exactly an impeccable CV in the eyes of many Canadians. Sounds like a right-wing nutbar the Reformers were good at rounding up.

edit: Even if we accept he was a Cdn, he certainly had no power or influence.

Yes, that was where I found this Herb Grubel fellow.

Btw, the Fraser Institute is considered a right wing think tank. Some of their proposals really incite the lefties in this country.

I found it interesting that 50% of the people in Ontario liked the idea of the Amero in 2001.

I'm sure the break down in the US would be similar with large urban areas, who do most of the international business, loving the idea and rural areas hating it. For its part Mexico seems the biggest supporter of a currency union.

He's dubious for a few reasons.

                  1) He comes from a bad place.
                  2) He lives and ran for office in BC (lunatics live there and run the place - FACT)
                  3) He was a one term Reformer.

All in all I have to question his sanity.

Of more immediate and practical concern was the October 2004 agreement entitled a Trinational Call for a North American Economic and Security Community by 2010. The document called for harmonization of trade policies, including tariff rates, among the three NAFTA members and increased cooperation for border security in North America specifically targeting smuggling (mainly drug smuggling and human trafficking). The plan calls for the Canadian and US governments to assist in securing Mexico's southern border to stop illegal immigration and drug smuggling from further south.

"increased co-operation" = Do it the US way or **** off.

There will not be a joint border partol just more of the same.

I agree with your earlier comment wrt a future currency design. It would have to be common 1-side and individual country designs on the other. That would be an far easier sell here.

I've heard stories of Cdn retailers not accepting US coins anymore. It's kind of a cute turn of events.

Those Canadian quarters sneak across the border. It's not uncommon to find you've been slipped a Canadian quarter in places like Washington state.
