Not 'zactly. On Hogwatch Eve, the Hogfather travels around Discworld on his giant sledge pulled by eight gigantic hogs delivering presents to all the good little boys and girls. But this year, he's disappeared and is replaced by Death (who does speak in all CAPITALS in the books...but that can't really be portrayed in the movie version, now, can it?).

It was excellent. The guy who played Teatime was well cast. Death was very nicely done. And the general translation from written to visual was quite nicely imagined and well executed.

I'd really like to see a long series of Pratchett novels go to film. Especially since new Discworld novels are now such rare events.

What do you mean? He writes a new one about once a year ... that's pretty normal for authors, especially since he's writing another series for young readers at the same time (which is pretty decent also).

Miss Susan was wonderful. From the books, I didn't imagine her as a babe, but that cute little button nose worked surprisingly well to add to her power.

The Dicken's look for the city and people was great.

The wizards were week, all wearing the same gowns and hats. I expected a cornicopia of colors and styles. Their collective acting was also somewhat mundane.

& I think the movie would have worked better if it'd been shrunk down to 2 - 2 1/2 hours. It would have picked up the pace and would have compressed the jokes and made it funnier.

I'll give it four out of five stars.

His pace is definitely slower than the heyday, when he was really churning them out. Check out copyright dates. Now we're lucky to get one per year, and lately it's been Wee Free Men. (I'm OK with the WFM stuff, but prefer proper Discworld novels.)

Fortunately, there's a new one right now, "Making Money." Just bought it for my wife's Christmas. Now I just have to keep her from getting it until then.

He's had one Discworld novel a year for ... a long time. I don't know about the British publication stuff, some of that might have been more frequent (but is also somewhat shorter); but since he's started simultaneous publishing stateside, around 2002 or 2003 I think, he's had one Discworld novel a year pretty much like clockwork from what I can recall (working at a bookstore and all during the entire period...)

I won't complain about an author putting out a book a year, given Bujold, George Martin, Kate Elliott, etc. giving much more reason to complain Bujold hasn't done a Miles book in forever (and may not put any more out, but there's always hope)...

Goddammit! I just got back from the library, and having read this post, I've checked the library's website and it has two copies which are not yet checked out! To make matters worse, the "reserve" feature has been disabled, so I'm not able to put a "Hold" on the book.

He had a small stroke a couple years back. It didn't affect his language skills, thankfully, but it did affect his motor skills. He used to put out two books a year, but I'd be surprised if he hadn't slowed down after that.

Anyway, it was a pretty good adaptation. There's also a short in post-production, called Troll Bridge, based on one of the Cohen the Barbarian short stories. "Wee Free Men" is also supposed to be made in to a movie.

I've also seen the Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music animated series. They turned out pretty good, too. Still haven't seen the Johnny and the Dead series, though. Need to find that.

I love Pratchett's work so much that I can't read anyone else's stuff. Obviously this has drawbacks, so can anyone recommend me another writer who can compete in terms of humour, philosophy, satire and sheer shamelessly cheesy linguistics?
