That's good news for me then, I'm already a concept-spouting do-nothing robot! I should ace the MBA!

Zkribbler, SO I guess in that situation it would be benficial to not have a PhD then?
PhD is a perfect example of letters that don't mean much. What I mean by this is that people who get it usually do research, even as their full time job. But what does it mean? Well, you qualified for it by taking few courses and wrote your dissertation. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.
But how it happened is more interesting, if it took someone 10 years to complete and they did it full time, I mean sure... maybe it hinders them, because obviously they can't get things done. If they compelted it in 2 years and got good results, well, maybe they aren't morons.
And what would I do with both PhD and MBA? Nothing in itself, I'm not looking to offer my skills to any company only. I'm interested in the actual topic, that's it. Now, I'll continue to just do research on it or perhaps at some point set up my own business. So MBA and PhD won't give me any more salary, because I'm not looking to be employed by someone as a person responsible for my field of knowledge. It is nto something that I'm interested in, so it has absolutely 0 value as far as the level of salary goes for me, but it gives me value with the knowledge I gain and produce. In da butt.

Yeah, a PhD is worthless unless you are in academia. I've known several people in my line of work with PhDs, but even they say they got just for the hell of it.
An MBA can get you respect from some very superficial fools. A MS is really all you need to show you know your field in most sciences, a PhD just shows you got more schooling.

Yeah, I use it for networking and doing research of my own interest. Outside my job? Meaningless. But I like my job. I get to be very free, I mean I come and go as I please, I read the books I want and I write what I want, as long as I stay on the general area of the subject. Other than that? I'm free to do what I want. I have no responsibilities with courses or teaching etc... I just do my own thing and no one bothers me. That's hella coolBecause I'd be reading these same books on my spare time anyway, because that's what I did in the past
. IN fact, I still kind of order books that I find interesting, very few academic books. I even have fiction books!
Of course I need to produce results and make my work visible to our clients, as in official papers and articles and stuff like that, but hey, I don't mind doing them. I quite like it and I don't have to struggle, since it is my domain. So... I get paid very poorly, I make... less than 24k a year. Less. But I'm happy. I get to do what I want and that's important.
And you know what? That motivates me. I usually go to work at 9AM, drink some coffee and read news and take it easy for an hour, then I start reading and continue what I was doing earlier... I usually leave 5-6PM, but if I want, and sometimes I do, I leave 1PM or earlier. AS A RESULT, I WORK MORE in general. Also time wise. I read and write ont he weekends as well for few hours unless something else is happening. I do it on my spare time as well. SO, because I have lots of freedoms, as a result, I work more. It works for me and I wouldn't have it any other way as of now.
I can't be expected to work steady hours. Expect me to work long hours, but not steady hours.Last edited by Pekka; November 16, 2007, 15:51.In da butt.

You couldln't pin me down with the normal work roles anyway. I mean... I've stopped using the alarm clock to get up for work. I have it as a back up though, I admit, because if I'd happen to sleep past 10AM, I need to be getting up anyway. However, I just wake up when I naturally wake up... then I do my morning things and maybe go to work after that. Then I come home when I feel like it. That's it. I don't work for your hours. I work all the time, slowly but steady. I never stop working really. I'm constantly thinking about the issues in it.
Also, don't expect me to be in my office all the time and available. If you need me, you can e-mail me or if important, call me. I accept peopel calling me 24/7.
So I'm not lazy. I'm reachable at all times even if I'm not there. And even if I'm not there to look grumpy when the sun just got up, I still work more and take it easy. I think that's fair. So if someone says to me, you need to work these hours? It's going to be a problem. I might take a day off in the middle of the week if I don't feel like coming in or reading at home. I might do that, I might take a long weekend and drink myself silly if that's what I want to do. I will go if I'm NEEDED or supposed to be there, however, if no rational reason? Don't try to track me, I don't like being watched and tracked and followed.
So I might be a nightmare for some bosses but then again I might be the ideal type for other bosses.Last edited by Pekka; November 16, 2007, 16:05.In da butt.
