    Bureaucracy discovers the obvious

    Airline websites 'are misleading'

At least 200 European airline websites are misleading the consumer, a study by the European Commission has found.

Websites are failing to show taxes and charges, and refusing to advertise the lowest fare prominently, according to the report.

The Commission has refused to name any airlines involved in order to give them time to improve their service.

Last month, a Spanish watchdog said it had found misleading information on seven websites, including Ryanair.

    Extensive search

The European Commission could force offending websites to close next year if they fail to improve.

Fifteen different national airline authorities across the EU took part in the exercise for one weekend at the end of September.

They trawled through 400 websites, and found half were not complying in one way or other with EU law.

    Common infringements included:

    * prices on the home page that did not include taxes and charges
    * "free" flights that were not free
    * compulsory purchase of insurance attached to an offer

When Spain's consumer rights watchdog conducted a similar study on October, it found faults on seven out of 12 airline sites, with the culprits including Ryanair, Vueling, Iberia and Spainair.

The UK's Office of Fair Trading has already taken action against 13 airlines for leaving taxes, fuel fees and other charges off their advertised prices.

The Commission's study found that Belgian airlines were the worst offenders, with 46 of the 48 Belgian websites surveyed breaking consumer guidelines.

Meanwhile, Austria was the best performer, with none of the 20 Austrian airline websites judged to be misleading.

That's kind of the point he's making. It's not news, but someone felt the need to do a study on it. Of course, a thread about something that isn't news but was made into news is still not an interesting thread.

i find the following to be the most amusing part of the article
The European Commission could force offending websites to close next year if they fail to improve.

instead of heavy fines the EC will close down websites?

I would have thought closing the websites would cause alot more damage to airlines than fines, considering current business models.

Can you actually buy tickets for a specific flight from Ryanair (or BA or...) from sites like Orbitz or Travelocity? (Honest question, I've never boaught plane tickets before)

I can't say for a specific airline, but yes, those sites primarily exist to sell tickets for specific flights from major airlines (and some minor ones...)
