  • Is Baldur's Gate I Any Good?

I play strategy games, not RPG. Apart from the impressively crafted Fallout which I enjoyed, I haven't played many other games in the genre. Now I discover that I have BG I discs. Should I install? I see the game is universally praised on the internets, but I would like to know what fellow strategists think. Can spearman kill a tank in this game? How about ICS, has it been creatively solved?

Yes... it's good, but "Other Games".

BGII kicks its ass though .

I liked it. But for some reason I couldn't use spells with the copy I had and I ended up giving it up. It was a legit copy too. Go figure. I'd like to give it another go at some point, from what little I saw, I liked it.

The graphics are old, but they aren't ugly so it isn't that bad.

                Definitely good,
                especially with the expansion pack

Pretty good, but it's getting to the point where the graphics are distractingly dated.

Yeah but the storyline is excellent. And it's an RPG. Graphics is a secondary issue.

As someone who still doesn't see the point of 3D in most games, I have to say that graphics are not too important for me.

I installed the game but I'm not playing. Why? I loaded it and went to do something, when I returned (my) character said "I should be doing something more productive with my time". I decided to roleplay that and do some things that I have been postponing.

My worry about this game (and other such games, like World of Warcraft) is that they could become a major time sink. Hopefully I can finish this one in 5-6 hours of play (I'm pretty good at adventure games).

BG is probably more like 10-20 hours. Nothing like a MMORPG in that regard of course.

I don't see a newbie getting through BG in 20 hours.... But it isn't like WoW, it's still just a game.

                            Yep.
you can make many more hours of gameplay out of BG1, if you don´t try to solve the story as fast as possible but instead also try to do sideplots and explore the landscape (which IMHO in such an RPG is as important as the main story itself)

No way should you be rushing through a game like Baldur's Gate, take your time and go explore. Play the original and the sequel as well as the expansions and you'll se how a fantasy RPG should be, I couldn't stand Neverwinter Nights or Morrowind personally.
