From what I understand he wouldn't renew a license for a media outlet that was backing the coup, hardly earth shattering. In this country they'd be up on charges of treason.

I believe that before Chavez got elected he did try to take power via a coup. It's hard to have a coup without killing people; in fact it is so rare that we have the special phrase "bloodless coup" to specify no one died. I notice Chavez's coup isn't called bloodless.

Edit: Chavez did indeed attempt to over throw the Venezuelan government in Feb 1992 and again in Nov 1992.

I guess Chavez granted them the same courtesy when they attempted to take him out. In any case, I think that the country, even though going towards the "dictatorial" - is not a tyrannicala dictatorship just yet.

and for Flubber - no reason not to believe your colleague, I guess I would be afraid too if I was in her shoes, and if I was not certain whether they would hold me or not...

but I would say still there is a fair difference between the proper "stalin style" tyranny, and the way Chavez behaves. He wants himself set for life as a president it seems, but he is not yet outright murdering the protestors as commented in OP.
