  • Toy company drugs young children

Three children in Australia are in hospital after swallowing beads from the award winning 'toy of the year' Bindeez Beads. Apparently the glue on the beads turn to the illegal drug fantasy when swallowed(GHB- gamma hydroxy butyrate). Read news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=318190 for further details.

My granddaughter is now very disappointed, she loved playing with those beads and now they have been taken off her for her safety. Companies need to check the quality of those products from China much more seriously.

I predict addicts across Australia will rush out to buy these before they're recalled.

If people didn't buy the chinese crap that's flooding the market we wouldn't have all these problems with toxins, led poisoning and whatnot...

Why are poisonous things always cheaper than safe things? Gah!

You'd think that at the rate China is exporting toxic materials, it'd now be less expensive to make non-toxic ones. I mean, they have to be suffering from a major lead shortage.

Look if we want cheap products, we're just going to have to put up with them being poisonous from time to time.

                            From Wikipedia

The toy was supposed to contain the non-toxic chemical 1,5-pentanediol, but instead contains 1,4-butanediol, which is metabolised into the drug gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB, commonly known as a date rape drug).

                            [...]

1,4-Butandiol is converted into GHB by the enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase and differing levels of these enzymes may account for differences in effects and side effects between users.Because these enzymes are also responsible for metabolizing alcohol there is a strong chance of a dangerous drug interaction. Emergency room patients who overdose on both alcohol and 1,4-butanediol often present with symptoms of ethanol intoxication initially and as the ethanol is metabolized the 1,4-butandiol is then able to better compete for the enzyme and a second period of intoxication ensues as the 1,4-butanediol is converted into GHB.

                            Pharmacodynamics

1,4-Butanediol seems to have two types of pharmacological actions. The major psychoactive effects of 1,4-butanediol are due to the fact that it is metabolized into GHB, however there is some evidence that 1,4-butanediol may have inherent alcohol-like pharmacological effects that are not due to this conversion.

These toys have resulted in the hospitalizing of many children in Australia and other countries including the USA for at least 6 months, up to now, no one has made the link between the swallowing of the beads and the severe symptoms some of these children suffered, only now going back through hospital and doctors records are the authorities realizing how many children were drugged by these toys, maybe up to 100 in Australia alone.
