  • Law School

So, I did well on the LSAT but I don't know if I really want to be a lawyer or go to law school. If anybody here has been to law school, how was it? Is it really as bad as everybody makes it out to be? And if you have graduated doing you enjoy being a lawyer?

I've heard that it isn't so bad if you can get past the 1st year.

Being smack-dab in the middle of the first year I can only advise that you have to be a bonafide masochist to stand half a chance. If you enjoy being so mentally exhausted and so perpetually sleep-deprived that a pile of broken glass would look cozy, then by all means go for it.

          First year is pure hell.

After that, its a mix of a few required classes and a lot of filler boutique classes-enviro law, sports law, mediation-stuff like that. In other words, cake.

My class started at ~250, we graduated ~170. 95% of that attrition occurred first year. That was an anomalous class for my school, they ****ed up the admissions and more people chose law school due to the tanking economy. The year after, the class started at 160, I believe. -mediocre state flagship law school

I also heard that the first year is the most important year in relation to job offers and such, is this true.

My favorite part of my first year was waiting from finals time until mid january before learning my grades.

Zero sleep. Much anxiety. Thinking about how I was going to make my death look like an accident. Very very dark days. I was very unpleasant to be around. And then grades came, and I was somewhere in the top 3rd (not that I finished there, due to the aforementioned attrition and burnout).

              Ugh.

don't take me back there, please mommy.

Hm, seems like my high school and university are preparing me well...

Bah, considering how much I'll be drinking after finals I know I'll sleep like a baby. Not to mention that by then I'll have racked up at least 180 hours of sleep debt.

*dammit Cline, why couldn't you set a specific acceptance deadline instead of using this lawsuit-magnet timeframe and giving me more crap to read???*

Depends on where you go, really, and what you want to do.

Most people won't have jobs until after they graduate or after they pass the bar. I didn't, but I moved out of state into a small community (at first), so it wasn't easy.

If you want a corporate job or a clerkship, then yes, you need to aim high that first year. That way you can get a nice job for your first summer, which you can possibly parlay into a full position after graduation.

Ha, I caught that article a few weeks back. I'd like to think those figures are no surprise for any law student, but based on some of the whining in the article I guess not.

Anyone who thinks they're somehow entitled to enter practice after graduation is in for one hell of a rude awakening, not to mention about a decade of enslavement by garnishments to recover their charged-off student debts. Unless you A) already have a good job, B) snag a scholarship, or C) are guaranteed to end up in the top 20% of your class, law school these days is a foolish gamble.

Virtually every waking hour outside of work, unless you have a 170 IQ and a memory like a sponge.
