Most of the big stuff has been down. There are laws requiring us to clear brush from around our property...or the fire department does it and charges us. No one builds with wood shingles anymore (I don't know whether that's a law or just mandated by insurance commpanies).

The big problem is we have hundreds of square miles of very rugged terrain that's covered with very dry brush. One spark can start a major inferno, and the Santa Ana winds fan the flames and can blow burning embers over firebreaks and even freeways.

We have 9 million people in this county, and if only 1 in a million is a firebug, then we have 9 arsonists out setting fires.

He's getting very favorable press. He signed the law funding city and county governments to put reverse 911 systems in plus the state paid for most of the new computers and radio systems. During the 2003 fires police, fire, and hospital/ambulance units couldn't communicate due to each having different frequencies and different computer systems; the new system lets everyone communicate and coordinate activities.

All the press has also been complimentary about how fast the governor got the state's planes in though it took longer to get the CDF's fire teams. Also there seems to have been some sort of problem between the state and the Feds because the Feds took a long time to get here. Predictably the Feds are blaming the state and the state is saying the Feds took forever to get their act together.

Right now people here seem more willing to believe Schwarzenegger because he did a fairly good job with the state's assets plus they remember the Fed's mass **** up after Katrina.

Oerdin I'm going to have to call you out. You show your "outrage" over gay republicans, but come on. How important is that in the big scheme of things?

It doesn't mean ****. I don't want to single you out, as no one else mentioned this in this thread either.

I'm speaking of the "fake" news conference the goverment held. This is a travesty. Someone mentioned something on the news (CNN report on bad products sold to Home Depot) that the public agencies aren't talking to the public. And I believe it. And then this fake news confernce came out. This was mentioned on the news, but really didn't get that much coverage. Why is the goverment not accountable to the public for their actions?

And seeing as homeland security not only provides disaster relief, but protects us from terrorist attacks (supposedly) I think it's rather important they talk to the public and answer questions.

I thought we had a thread already about FEMA's fake news conference?

did we? then disregard the above.

I just wanted to make sure there was a fair amount of outrage over this. Instead of being outraged at silly stuff like hypocritical republicans (like democrats aren't as big of hypocrits).

I don't recall any vehement outrage... but a goodly amount of mocking none-the-less.

Actually... on some other game boards that's pretty much spot on, daily occurance. Also when I walk down to the pier to watch the waves at night it can be a bit like that too... minus most of the intellectual references and with far more drunkeness...

                          Thanks

We always seem to come out pretty well here. Just get a lot of smoke from the less fortunate areas. There's a Marine base N of the city, and whenever the fires get close they take care of them pretty well.

I've moved back and forth from Oceanside to central Utah several times the last 7 years or so. I'd guess I was in Utah and/or not reading OT at the time of the poly meets in the area.
