Thanks for the comments: in the next months i will bring better illustrations.
The Phalanx did use pikes (sarissa) and their strengh was on their cohesion: whenever they did nort manage to hold that cohesion they were in serious trouble oposing a more flexible foe.

          You remember half correct
The phalanxes formation was 15-20 ranks deep, but indeed, in the hoplite phalanx, only the 3 first ranks were holding spears horizontally and tried to reach the ennemy. In the Macedonian phalanx up to the 5 first ranks could do so.
The difference was also that in the hoplite phalanx one could hold the spear with one hand and the shield in the other. The long spear of the macedonian phalanx had to be held with 2 hands, so no shield for them.

No match for a blaster though
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

The phalangite did wear shields: they were attached to the forearm allowing the left hand to be free to use the sarissa.

No wonder considering the size of their sarissas
