Gerrard fears for England chances

Steven Gerrard concedes that England are unlikely to qualify for Euro 2008 after Wednesday's 2-1 defeat by Russia.

England need to beat Croatia and hope Russia fail to beat either Israel or Andorra to qualify for next summer's tournament in Austria and Switzerland.

"It is looking doubtful," said the Liverpool midfielder. "We will see it out until the end and, hopefully, Israel can do us a favour."

"It's out of hands so we have to hope and pray," said striker Wayne Rooney.

"Of course it's difficult. We have to hope Israel can help us out and then hopefully win against Croatia."

Loss in Russia mystifies McClaren

England coach Steve McClaren struggled to explain his side's 2-1 defeat by Russia, which leaves their Euro 2008 qualification in serious doubt.

"We had it in our grasp and ended up losing," said McClaren, who saw England take a first-half lead.

"I've been involved in games like this before and there are no answers as to how it is possible to end up on the losing side.

"It's a bad position. We have to rely on Russia stumbling against Israel."

It's good to see Russia on the course for qualifying. They've been absent from far too many finals in later years.
