Before we left we tidied it perfectly and the stressed landlord was very relieved when he went through the leaving check, I think he'd been expecting the place to be trashed. In the end he said that we didn't owe him anything.
You must have horrible rental credit.

I generally won't press over the interest as it's $5 or less usually; but someone who doesn't pay you the interest probably won't give you the deposit back either, so i'll generally move on quickly if possible.

Take them to court if they don't give you the full deposit back, and don't have valid documentation backing up why anything they withhold. Small claims court is not much work, and you can easily win your money back if they didn't follow the law fully, which they almost never do.

Fish, hamster or ant farm for a companion for your dog?
Oh, Wiggy. I didn't know you'd gone this far over the edge.

Oh, Wiggy. I didn't know you'd gone this far over the edge.
Ant farms are very fascinating to me, why wouldn't they be fascinating to my dog? I am a little smarter than Washington so I would imagine he'd be even more interested in the ant farm than I am, which is saying something. The way they build tunnels is amazing.

No I was not sued or locked up. I am living in an apartment due to circumstances entirely out of my control. I decided to move because rent is cheaper than it used to be.

Thanks for the help everyone I will sue this bastard if he cheats me out of this deposit. There is a long contract but of course I didn't read it, nor was I expected to.

Do the written and signed inspection Wiggy. It is your best protection down the road. Unless of course you are planning on trashing the place...

I'm pretty sure we don't have rental credit over here. Even if we do, I bought a flat in March and so will hopefully never have to rent again!

The interest on the deposit for the past few places I've lived have been at least £60 ($120). I haven't chased for them but would think that in fairness I'm owed them (don't know about legally). I'm quite lazy and often spend more money than I should (rather than looking around for the same thing cheaper) or don't try and get money I'm owed.

I had an ant-farm once - long ago. It was quite interesting, and I learned a few things about ants. You got to build a little city with slim plastic tanks with earth in them and tubing connecting them.

You can feed them sugar, which they like, but I think I overdid it and they got sugared-out and died. Fun while it lasted though.

I got more back for my desposit than I gave initially, despite having to pay for a couple things (I didn't have time to clean the fridge) due to interest.
