Martini by definition are not "straight" gin - as vermouth is part of the drink, as is usually ice in the shaking process.............

    Martini

    Straight gin
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

I rarely drink liquor straight these days and even back in the day I didn't do it all that often. Once in a long while I will order a good single malt Scotch on the rocks but then I'll milk it for a long time; just sipping and savoring it.

Pervert - one thing is adding some water, but ice !!!!
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

If teh gin is good enough, you can skip teh vermouth.

And liquor can be chilled over ice and still be "straight."

Then it is not a real martini........

And once the ice melts the slightest bit - it is no longer straight - water will effect the taste.

It depends on the type of establishment I'm in. Most bars in the US don't carry single malt Scotch unless you're in a big city or high end place. The single malts offered are often just the biggest brands like Glenmorangie or Macallan. Now if you're in a big city and in an upscale place (or even just a well stocked British Pub) then you can find a wider selection including bottles from small or family owned places. Right off the top of my head I can't think of the names.

I do remember when my dad's Uncle & his cousin (my dad is from Scotland but his parents brought him to the US when he was young) came to visit us. They brought a bottle Dalwhinnie 29 year old as a gift and that stuff was liquid gold. I haven't had any since though given that it sells for $300 a bottle here in the US. More often if I want a Scotch I'm forced to get a blended (but still quality) Scotch like Johnny Walker Black Label or Blue if it is a more posh club. That suits me well enough most of the time.

Ok, that makes some kind of sense

The Dalwhinnie isn't bad (it's actually good), but try Laphroaig, Talisker or Caol Ila - my personal favorite is Caol Ila, but Laphroaig is a close second, but it isn't simple - I like their quarter cask but actually prefer their more plain 10 yo version - it's a bit more rough, but I like it's bite.

                                Tennessee Moonshine.

Oh the stories I could tell (and most of them reasons NOT to drink it!)
