                        This isn't new, 2 years ago when I was in Europe I got one of those in change and didn't notice then I couldn't get rid of it.

                          There are vending machines in the US that give the $1 coins back as change but do not take them as payment.

                            Apart from being irrelevant to the issue at hand (since the Turkish coin shown in the OP is clearly modelled after the Euro), I notice that none of the examples you posted seem to predate the first issue of Euros. I wonder what that could possibly mean..
