                They make machine components now that analyze the chemical properties of coinage to detect fakes. That's why wooden coins don't work.

                        I think it's not a very sophisticated mechanism. It tests for size, weight and perhaps magnetic properties, but nothing more. It's enough to stop fakes.

                              To be fair to the Turks, there seems to be a long tradition of bimetallic coins. It's not something invented for the Euro.
