Brake Down That Belgium!

Remember, I told you they're gonna break first (towards end of post).

They will break up into a North Belgium and a South Belgium. The North Belgians will blocade access to Brussels, and the Brits and Yanks will have to airlift supplies in. Then the North Belgians will build a wall to keep the South Belgians out (or perhaps the North Belgians in). Then an American President will come over and say "Ich bin ein Brussel Sprout." Another President will say, "Tear down this wall and open the space up for an airy feel."

It's Brussels that keeps Belgium from breaking up. It's a largely francophone city deep inside the Flemish territory. So go figure how to break this up. Breaking up Czechoslovakia was a piece of cake compared to that.

Partly this is what is going on. They won't abolish their languages, of course. But increasingly more often they speak English to each other.

Easy. The north becomes Flanders, an independent state. The south becomes Wallonia, an independent state. Brussels becomes an independent city directly governed by the E.U., similar in circumstance to Washington, D.C.

Nowadays it's globalization that undermines bilingual countries. Now that everyone must know English, and given the scientific fact that it is highly unnatural for the average person to master more than two languages, the parts of a bilingual country get increasingly more alienated from one another.

But in this way you would really cut a living body. A large part of the Brussels citizens feel the one with Wallonia and even come from there. It's not the same as breaking up two communities that got utterly alienated from one another (like Wallonia and Flanders).
