  • Credit Reports?

Hey. I have heard that you can get Credit Reports for Free now... how do you do that? I am mostly interested in online ones, and to see what lines of credit I have open (to make sure that there aren't any that are open that shouldn't be).

    thanks,
    JM

Send me all of your personal information, and I'll get a credit report for you. For free, no less.

I'm not sure about the various "freecreditreport.com" type things, but one easy way is to apply for a credit card that you know you won't get. Assuming you don't get it, they are required to give you a copy of your credit report.

            The site is annualcreditreport.com

They then prepare links for you to the three reporting agencies. They'll try to sell you your credit score for a nominal fee. Just decline all that.

            Good luck.

I heard that your credit is affected each time you have a credit check performed. Is that true?

                Thanks!

I was wondering because although I have good credit, I wanted to make sure no one had opened any accounts or anything.

I had two (three?) accounts I had forgotten about, but other then that everything was good.

One element on your credit report is how often it is queried, yes. As long as it's not frequent it doesn't matter. I don't know if you asking for your credit score affects it or not.

Yeh, this year there was an account that was open, but I hadn't used for a good decade. It showed up on all three reports. Had to call the company and close it.

Makes sense to do some pruning from time to time.
