CPM sheds atheism to woo Muslims

NEW DELHI: The CPI(M) is discarding atheism to woo Muslim voters. Reason: For the first time, the CPI(M) unit in Kochi allowed its Muslim members to leave a party meeting for namaaz.

On Monday, the Lanthaparambu branch committee of the party also served refreshments to its Muslim members to break their Ramzan fast. With Christians turning against the CPI(M) in the wake of the LDF government's attempts to take control of convent schools and colleges, the party is assiduously wooing the Muslim community.

Pro-Left Muslim organisations in Kerala like People’s Democratic Front, Indian National League and Jamat-e-Islami have now trained their guns on the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which is part of the UPA at the Centre and the LDF in the state. The leaders of these parties feel the IUML did not articulate Muslim sentiments about the US attack on Iraq.

The Marxist leadership has already started campaigning on issues dear to Muslims such as implementation of the Sachar Committee and Sri Krishna Commission recommendations. The Muslim-centric campaign is also expected to help its anti-Congress regional allies such as Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh, who are part of the Third Front that CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat is envisaging.

These are the same people, by the way, who religiously chant, "Secularism! Secularism! Secularism!" whenever they want to oppose the BJP on pretty much anything (they even try to link free-market economic policy to some secret Hindutva agenda).

Considering that these are the same people who would never in their lives make the same exception for Hindus, and who vilify practising Hindus as "teh oppressors", yes, I do disagree. If you are committed to atheism, and don't allow religious people into your party, you better stick with it. Admitting a person who is religious, and making a special exception for their religiosity, into a political party based on atheism as one of its founding tenets, is an abandonment of principles and a total loss of integrity.

It sounds like they already had a tenuous alliance with a different religious minority (Christians) and having fouled that up are trying a different minority. Sounds like pure opportunism to me and I see no reason why Muslims should be excluded so long as the Muslims their wooing (presumably very leftist Muslims) agree that the GOVERNMENT should be secular theirs no reason not to cooperate.

According to your own article, Christians used to be a CPI constituency. That's changing, so they're courting Muslims. So the idea that the CPI didn't allow religious people into their party is false on its face, leaving aside any intuition that your claim couldn't possibly be true (unless atheists are a majority in places like East Bengal and Kerala, which would be fairly absurd).

The Muslim parties believe, and say out loud, that government should not be secular.

These aren't leftist Muslims, they're out-and-out fundamentalists.
