  • Great Jehova and the Continental Congress!

A friend of mine were talking on how U.S. history has loads of great military quotes, but other nations don't appear to have such a rich tradition.

    F'Example:
When the British Commander of Ticonderoga asked to whom he was surrendering, he received the thundering reply "To Great Jehova and the Continental Congress!"

    Others are:
"Don't fire till you see the whites of their eyes!"
"I have not yet begun to fight!"
"We have met the enemy, and he is ours!"
    "War is hell."
    "Lafayette, we are here!"
    "I shall return."
    "Nuts!"
"Retreat hell! We're just attacking in a different direction!"

    The Brits have:
"England expects every man to do his duty."

Help me out here. What are some others?

Nosey was a bit of allright:

Nothing except a battle lost can be half as melancholy as a battle won.

Yes, and they went down very well too.

    Up, Guards, and at 'em.

And another good one by Winnie (when he was cricized for complimenting Stalin):

"I'm sure that, if Hitler invaded the Infernal Regions, I could find something nice to say about Satan to Parliment."

...of course, then Winnie was serving as a politician, not a military man. I'm searching for military quotes...esp. non-Yank quotes.

Most of the quote appear to be from political leaders, military theorists and Americans.

But here's a good 'un from Goering about artillery:

Guns will make us powerful, butter will only make us fat.
                  Hermann Goering
