We had a similar situation with some cows our dad bought. We'd raise them from calves and butcher them as adults. We're not talking about profit farming though, but just a few cows for ourselves. Problem is my brother and I were young and grew attached to the some of the cows as pets. At least once, my dad had to sell a cow we begged him not to butcher. It's probably was butchered anyway, but in our ignorance, we were relieved our pet was safe.

The cows are fine. They were taken to a cow ranch where retired cows live happily ever after.
