Why the hell should Germany care?

Well, we shouldn't (and here we don't) when they (PRC gov) come up which such sillyness. Otoh Merkel's policy isn't without any risk, since China could try to hurt German business there if this develops into a deeper crisis, but China would also hurt itself to some extent by this, and so far it doesn't look likely that they'd do it.

China seems to be somehow obsessed by the Ocean of wisdom considering the fact that they issued the law that no budhist monk in tibet is allowed to reincarnate anymore, which is obviously targetted at the next reincarnation of the Dalai Lama
