Don't know about you all (looking at you Sloww), but this looks straight forward to me. Mandela is dead and Saddam killed him.

Or maybe my English teacher from way back then was worse than I thought him to be?
He was speaking figuratively. He wasn't meaning "the" Mandela.

As I said, it was poorly worded.

Nah, the problem is that it's a rightwing religious looney that said it - if a left wing noob had said it, everyone would have understood the meaning .
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

The clue that it's figurative (apart from the fact that he's bringing up Mandela re: Iraq) is the plural - there isn't some clone army of Nelson Mandelas.

They are either dead or scared to show themself (if the latter case, they probably isn't real Mandelas).

Man, this is the stupidest thing I've seen in quite a while.

Where's a leftist with an actual clue? Well, he's dead because knee-jerk hatred of anything President Bush will do or say has caused leftists to completely lose their minds.

I was on a leftist blog recently that poked fun at Bush for this... but its really only a stupid comment if you automatically consider Bush to be an idiot and take everything he says literally... which is a stupid stance to take in the first place.

Given the context of the statement (i.e. the question to which he was responding), the statement was perfectly reasonable.

Y, there are far better 'Bushisms' if you want to laugh at the man. This was minor.

Well, I am surprised Bush even knows Mandela. Cool.

I think all Bushisms are fair game to laugh at.

In times like this, we need all the laughter we can get. That is Bush's legacy.

Mr. Bush said the brutality of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein had made it impossible for a unifying leader to emerge to stop the violence. He went on to say: "Where's Mandela? Well, Mandela's dead because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas."
People need to read this again, maybe 3 or 10 times. This can be taken literally because he is referring to Mandela as a type, like a Gandhi. He is wondering where iraq's mendela is and says saddam killed him already. He even uses the term ''The mandela''.
if you want to stop terrorism; stop participating in it

''Oh,Commissar,if we could put the potatoes in one pile, they would reach the foot of God''.But,replied the commissar,''This is the Soviet Union. There is no God''.''Thats all right'' said the worker,''There are no potatoes''
