The recluse of Bayswater is my favourite story of this genre. It follows the events in the life of a young law student that fell ill, and after taking some medicine starts spending more and more of his time in his room. In the end he refuses to let anyone in, and when others finally break the door they are met with something quite unexpected

Honorable mention should be made to the ninth chapter of the Odyssey, where Odysseus and his men reach the land of the Cyclopai. Definately a strong candidate for being the first horror story of all time
