I've got a shotgun, but I'm becoming an independant and so am all concerned about killing aholes. I say taser em or spray them, then while they're floppin around, decide whether to use the shotgun. It's my new age approach, no more republican am I.

Taser. Like Sloww pointed out, you're more likely to get someone else with the spray than with taser. Besides, it's more difficult to protect yourself from getting tased than it is to avoid spraying. So taser is the better one. From safety perspective, I reckon they're in the same level, then again I might be wrong, this is just my intuitive guess. Taser can be problem with people who have heart problems etc. but who knows about the reactions people have with teh spray, who knows... some people have sensitive skin, I don't know.

I use pepper spray. It seems to be more legal.

In fact I think tasers are illegal where I live. Which makes no sense. Guns are perfectly legal (and we have loose gun laws), but tasers are not.

But for your personal arsenal, I wouldn't go for those two at all. If I had a girlfriend whose safety was a concern, I'd give her a taser rather than spray. With the taser, she only has to hit the guy as with spray she has to aim and shoot good, and under distress, she might miss and have only one shot. Too much pressure.

For myself? Telescope baton and for home protection, semi-automatic pump action shotgun. Shotgun has psychological effect for any home intruder plus you can aim more liberal with it. You just do the pump action and everyone knows what you have and that it's best to just get out fast. I think that alone scares intruders enough so you won't actually have to show up and try anything, just let them know what you have. If they decide to stay and try how lucky they are, you're more likely to score with it.

If it was legal though, I'd rather get an assault rifle, since I'm more familiar with assault rifles and can operate one pretty good. So yeah, I'd declare open war. 7.62 would be my caliber of choice. They give you a much bigger bang and also better damage. Feels more like total war.

For streets? If I thought I needed extra protection, telescope baton. It also has a psychological side to it, when you whip it to the full extension mode, most people realize they should already quit. If something really really bad was going to happen, then I'd get a concealed gun, but for random stuff, telescope baton and a small nasty knife for slashing, not poking.

And for the record, if I lived in a place where I'd need to carry telescope baton, I wouldn't. I would just move to a better place, period. I'm not going to get stabbed or shot just because "I lived in a bad neighbourhood". How stupid is that? It's a question of how much money you have, so it's not a bad neighbourhood problem, it's a money problem.

But even in better safe places, I would consider getting a shotgun for the home once I get family of my own. Maybe. It seems unlikely even then, but I might change my opinion so I'll keep that open in the air. In general though, I don't think I'll be buying any guns ever.

Vet, I'm writing a paper, after that I'll have some other paper I have to work on and then I have to do some more reading. I'm moving soon to the new place for the new job and I have tons of unfinished business (studies) left. I'm just doing these all the time, I sleep some in between. That's all I do. So when I feel tired, I'll go to sleep, then I wake up and I'll write and read some more. I'm usually the most productive if I have to write these hours of the day (well night). I don't know why, but I get things DONE.

But no, I don't sleep long either. I've been having sleeping problems for some time now, like serious ones. I can't sleep basically. I have to go for 20h+ to get sleepy enough to actually fall asleep, then I keep waking up every hour.

You think I do caffeine? I have a sleeping problem, I don't need caffeine. It's not a problem I find enjoyable right now. It doesn't mean I'm very upbeat, it means I'm very tired but can't sleep. It means my head hurts like a mofo. I WISH I could sleep. You know when you roll in the bed for 2 hours and can't sleep? That time seems like 40 hours. Imagine that for few months in a row, every single night you try to sleep, you can't. And please, no "eat better, exercize more".
