Why Are "Something to Think About While You Wait" Messages so Odd?

Once, the forum told me between posts:

"stop me before it is too late"

Being superstitious and all, I took it to heart and thought about it a lot. How do I stop an internet forum before it's too late?

Anyway, I remember owners asking for cool quotes some time back, in order to have something to put between posts. As far as I can remember, people mostly suggested SMAC quotes.

Where did all this creepy stuff come from?
