  • I created it, I can destroy it if I want to!

It's a pretty open ended question.

Say an artist creates a fantastic work of art which is inspirational and heartening. It brings joy to many of those who see it, some, even get attached to it - happily promoting it to others simply to bring those others some of the joy.

The question is relevant only in the context of the art being beloved by others - it's not about "Art in a void" (where only the artist and hypothetical Gods can enjoy it).

So: Does an artist have the right to destroy their creation?

    * Art can be anything pretty much. Painting, sculpture, copyrighted digital media etc...

For a second i thought this was about Star Wars special editions and endless rant about how George Lucas destroyed them and all those precious childhood memories .

If artist completely owns piece in question, yes they can destroy it. But, if they have sold it / given up rights etc etc they can't.

"Maybe". Depends would have been more appropriate i guess.

Of course he has the right to destroy it.

And if someone buys, say, all works of Picasso and wants to burn them, he has the right to do so.

No right. If people enjoy it. It is good and can't be destroyed ethically.

It doesn't matter who created it, what matters is who owns it. If someone buys a painting for millions of dollars and wants to destroy it, then let him. But the artist who painted it can't just go to the owner and burn it down, just because he doesn't like the painting anymore
This space is empty... or is it?

The only reason someone would want to do that is if they were religious nutters.

There's no reason to think this is ethical behavior. If the art or whatever is valuable, why don't they sell it?

And here I was thinking the thread was about abortion.
                Unbelievable!

Do you think it is ethical to get pregnant with the intent of having an abortion?

How many palaces and mansions have communists burned down over the years? What do you think was hanging on the walls?

I'm sure they removed the art. Stop making caricaturations.

You see, my pinko friend, in countries with viable political philosophies our building consist of more than cider blocks piled into blah square builidings, the buildings themselves are art.
