    China Recalls Tainted Leukemia Drugs
Chinese Government Also Announces Discovery Of Tainted U.S., Canadian Meat

BEIJING -- China's ongoing battle against tainted products has resulted in another recall. This time it's leukemia drugs found to be contaminated with another anti-cancer drug.

Some users of the drugs have complained of leg pains and urinary problems.

China's official Xinhua News Agency reports that most of the tainted drugs have been recovered and authorities know where the rest are. Xinhua also said factories that made the drugs have been shut down.

Chinese exports, including food, drugs and toys, have gotten a lot of attention lately because of potentially deadly problems. But China has also been eager to cast itself as a victim.

The government news agency on Sunday also reported that more than 18 tons of frozen pork kidney imported from the U.S. had been rejected because of a banned stimulant. A similar problem was found in 24 tons of frozen pork ribs from Canada.

This is going to backfire on them. First they sell lead painted toys to kids, then they attack our products. People will start avoiding Chinese goods.

Finding tainted US & Canadian meat sure is convenient...
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

How would the Chinese identify tainted US and Canadian meat? It's only 500% better than theirs rather than the normal 1000%? Disappointingly low proportions of rat and/or pigeon mixed in with the beef?

                  And today's story: Poison lunchboxes.

State issues warning on lunch boxes
The promotional items handed out by health officials may contain elevated levels of lead.

By Tami Abdollah, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
                  September 20, 2007

More than 50,000 lunch boxes given out by the state as part of its nutrition education effort may contain elevated levels of lead and the public should stop using them, officials said today.

The California Department of Public Health said testing found increased lead levels in three lunch boxes, which were made in China. They are green canvas and bear a logo that says, "Eat fruits & vegetables and be active." Officials urged the public to stop using the roughly 56,000 such boxes that have been handed out at health fairs and other events.

People should return the lunch boxes to the places they got them or take them to their local household hazardous waste collection facility for disposal, officials said.

The department has handed out about 300,000 lunch boxes for health promotion and nutrition education, through programs such as the Network for a Healthy California Program and the Special Supplemental Program for Women, Infants and Children.

Dr. Mark Horton, director of the department, said in a statement that all of its health promotion items would be evaluated for safety.

"We will no longer use lunch boxes until such time as we are assured that every lunch box is safe," he said.

The boxes that tested positive for lead were manufactured by TA Creations, which has factories in Canton, China.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children are more vulnerable than adults to lead poisoning, and even low levels of exposure can affect a child's mental and physical growth.

No known cases of lead poisoning have resulted from the use of the lunch boxes, officials said.

Yes, there are safety problems in China, but the meat is a separate issue.

Do you agree that it is okay for pork producers to inject growth hormones into the food we eat?

Canada and the U.S. say: adding chemicals to pork just to make it lean meat
                    Most countries say

Personally, I prefer to eat food without the chemical stew.

Because... ? Unless you're a doctor or a biochemist, i'm going to expect a very good rationale that is supported by one of those two professions as to why this is unsafe. Real, non-whacko doctors and biochemists universally agree that most stimulants used in this manner are perfectly safe for humans, and could not cause harm. Those that could cause harm are, *gasp*, not given to animals that could be eaten... I have that on the strong evidence of several people NOT in the pay of the ag industry who ARE biochemists and medical professionals.

I have no problem with a personal choice to eat only stimulant-free meat, either out of moral concerns or just preferring the safe route - but comparing the regulated, proven safe practice of adding stimulants to animals to improve their meat, to what's going on in china right now - to even mention it in the same article - is abhorrent and ridiculous.

Most countries disagree. Only 24 countries have approved its use. China is not alone in banning it. European countries have also banned it.

So there is concern and simply saying that those who disagree with you are wackos is hardly a solid argument.

I agree these are two separate topics, and the article is minimizing valid concerns about ractopamine by saying the Chinese response is only a spin tactic to divert attention from their own problems.
