To me conservatism can be nothing more than opposition to social liberalism. People may have differing beliefs and have various justifications, but by in large conservatism must be opposition to social liberalism, because social liberalism is just to strong.

This poll is not a scientific poll. On the other hand, there is a well known meta study called "Political Conservatism as Socially Motivated Cognition" that associates conservatism with mental rigidity and inability to deal with complexity, much as the study cited in the other thread claimed.

You realize the study in the other thread was a complete joke, right? At the very least it doesn't support the broad conclusions people have been making about it.

Many moderates (or independents) can take positions. Their positions simply aren't isomorphic to those of liberals or those of conservatives.

Have you ever in your life known me not to take a position?

If someone is a conservatice in social issues (against abortion, gay marriage etc) and a leftist in economic issues (likes state intervention in economy, free healthcare for everybody etc), what is he?

I think christian democracy parties are like that (obviously against abortion, gay marriage etc) but center left in economic issues, try to defend the workers etc and they are quite important in many countries in europe and latin america.

I guess if I lived in the USA I wouldnt vote.

European Christian Democrats aren't what Americans call conservatives. Frankly, the most left wing Democrats are pretty conservative compared to them.
