  • I just got in (rather late this evening). I see Congress rejected the bailout. I don't understand your politics.

    • Our politics:

Do nothing about problems until they're huge problems... then run around in circles screaming that the sky is falling so that congress will sign away more of it's constitutional responsibilities to the executive branch... leave underlying problems intact for the next round.

Here's a good analysis of the reason...

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

if that's all there is to it than ... I kind of hoping that this was politicians actually thinking when fiscal future, and the major political/financial turmoil of their careers takes place. + that there are more of them thinking (for once) than following the party line
Socrates: "Good is That at which all things aim, If one knows what the good is, one will always do what is good." Brian: "Romanes eunt domus"
GW 2013: "and juistin bieber is gay with me and we have 10 kids we live in u.s.a in the white house with obama"

          • There was also some argument on whose job it was to carry the water on this bailout. The Dems didn't want to be stuck with being the ones to be blamed for the bailout. After all, they were being asked by the President, who is from the GOP. On the other hand, they are the majority party in the House and have the duty to govern.

            • You've lived in DC too long

You use the same vocabulary as inside the beltway pundits. Save yourself before it's too late.

Kind of amazing. If a year ago you'd predict such images everybody would have declared your nuts (even if it isn't a major deposits bank).
Actually, i did... tho it was half a year ago and not quite my idea. I saw a lecture which explained the claims of the movie ´Zeitgeist´ concerning the credit system. It was held on march 15th and the guy said, that Bear Sterns was in deep trouble - next day JP Morgan Chase announced to buy them out. There already the FED bailed out in a way, since it lend 30bn (allegedly) to JP, to avoid a downspiraling of the whole credit-system...

Now, you can probably tell, i dont have much clue about how all this works exactly, but i was always pretty confident, that capitalism simply doesnt work, and that such crises are inevitable and one was due to occur very soon. Allthough, i dont quite understand, why the banks just simply wouldnt walk up to the FED and say: ´Hey we have been making lots of risky business lately (due to the low interest rates you guys set), and some went down the drain - so could you just print some more money to loan us, so we can get our businesses back up ?´ Then the FED could have said: ´Sure. But of course, since low interests seem to stimulate you to do overly risky businesses, we gonna up the rate...´ The whole thing then would have been a series of minor bailouts (which, as i do understand, take place all the time, whenever needed), instead of this big thing now. Or is it, that this was the way it worked for decades now, but the banks kept screwing it up each time, and now this will simply not do anymore ?

                            • Have no fear! The Bank of Austrailia just reduced interest rates. We're all safe now, or at least markets in Asia appear to think so.

Perhaps now would be a good time to be selling American bridges to Asians. They're probably too clever to fall for the swamp land. Lake front properties are right out.
