I was having the same thoughts about going to a grad school in the States. What's the best university for Political Theory? I was thinking of applying at the University of Chicago.

My honours supervisor knows Clifford Orwin at Toronto, Michael & Catherine Zuckert at Notre Dame, and Harvey Mansfield at Harvard... I know Toronto and Harvard have good programs, but what about Notre Dame?

Back home, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) was a good school and is well regarded nationally.

Don't waste your money doing a PoliSci grad degree in the U.S. Go to Canada instead. It's not worth it for the marginal gain in income.

Well, I'm going to apply at Toronto as one of my top preferences. But Canadian universities don't offer direct entry into a Phd... you have to do an MA. I've done a four year Bachelor's degree with a thesis component already... I don't see why I should have to do a masters.

And Mr Burns is Yale alumni too. I had a dream once I went to live in Connecticut. Yale would be the only reason to do so. Maybe its a sign.

New Haven is a really nice town. I have a friend who went there and I went to visit her once. Very pretty area.

In Connecticut? I'd have thought the best Pizza would be found in New York or Chicago. You learn something everyday.

If I were you, I would apply to, in order of importance:
                      Harvard
                      Princeton
                      Yale
                      Berkeley
                      Duke
                      Minnesota
                      Columbia
Notre Dame (since you have a contact there)

My wife just finished her phd in American/Methods and just started her r1 job, so I know a bit about the procedures. Theory is a tough gig, even from a top school like Duke, you might have to do a year or two as a visiting prof until landing a tenure track position. If you have to go to a second tier school, just make sure there is more than one prof that you can work for/with,to protect against retirement/movement.

pm me if you want more in depth/quasi personal info.

Do you have a better list for a political theory phd program?

np, that would be a bizarre list for an engineering student.
