I was having the same thoughts about going to a grad school in the States. What's the best university for Political Theory? I was thinking of applying at the University of Chicago.

Back home, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) was a good school and is well regarded nationally.

Well, I'm going to apply at Toronto as one of my top preferences. But Canadian universities don't offer direct entry into a Phd... you have to do an MA. I've done a four year Bachelor's degree with a thesis component already... I don't see why I should have to do a masters.

Minnesota
Columbia
Notre Dame (since you have a contact there)

My wife just finished her phd in American/Methods and just started her r1 job, so I know a bit about the procedures. Theory is a tough gig, even from a top school like Duke, you might have to do a year or two as a visiting prof until landing a tenure track position. If you have to go to a second tier school, just make sure there is more than one prof that you can work for/with,to protect against retirement/movement.
pm me if you want more in depth/quasi personal info.
