  • Lasik Surgery

Has anyone here had Lasik Eye Surgery? My girlfriend is going for it, but she's unsure how safe it is, what are the long term implications, etc.

Anyone recommend it? What is the process exactly?

Yes I will do some reading elsewhere, I just want some personal opinions too.

It was really, really popular in the Philippines (because it was really cheap, and because it was all done by machines -- so you didn't have to count of the competence of the Filipinos), and I had lots of friends who had it there. Most folks swore by it, though some complained that it left them seeing rainbow-like halos when they looked at lights. The other thing I remember hearing is that it was really only worth doing if your eyesight defect was slight; the worse your eyesight, the less likely lasik was to improve it in a lasting fashion.

I had it done about 5 weeks ago. My eyesight was pretty terrible before but is now better than 20/20, it was even better than 20/20 in my check-up 24 hours after the procedure.

They used one laser to cut my cornea, then pulled the cornea back and used another laser to correct the lens. Each eye took about 15 mins.

My sister and three work colleagues have had it done as well and they are all happy they did. One of the lads from work felt that his eyes were a bit dry for a few weeks after but it wasn't a problem.

I was told that my eyesight shouldn't get worse until I'm in my 50s or so when I'll probably need reading glasses (nothing can be done about that), the place I got it done offers a lifetime guarantee anyway so they'll redo it for free if my eyes degenerate.

She should definitely go for it, one of the best decisions I've ever made, there are so many little things that happen every day where it makes a difference!! Very liberating!

Hmmm. better than 20/20 vision would suit my goal of becoming a super-man. Mind if I ask where you got it down Cold Phoenix and how much it cost?

Is there an option to be able to shoot lasers *from* my eyes? I'd so totally sign up for that as well

They have procedures now that don't require any cutting.

Same as ColdPhoenix, except it was a couple of years ago and they vut open my cornea with a scalpel. It's a fun feeling!

Also: if you're unsure how safe something is and what the longterm implications are etc. then you should be considering it, not going for it. It's good that you're asking us geeks about it though.

I got it done at Ultralase (Tottenham Court Road, London). It cost me £3,000 (even after a 20% discount) because I went for the most expensive options, didn't want to skimp when it came to my eyes.

Most people's eyes continually improve for 3 days after the treatment, when I heard that and knew that I'd better than 20/20 after 24 hours I was hoping for superman vision! Didn't work out that way unfortunately, x-ray vision would have helped with my poker playing too!!

I had it done two winters ago. I went from moderate myopia and significant astigmatism to perfect vision. It cost me like $800.

My sister had hers done a year ago or so. She's very happy with results. It was cheap, but I can't recall the price. LS' $800 sounds about right.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. I did it in India, BTW. It was teh "Wave Front" type of Lasik, or something.

Yeah, I got wavefront too. Works nicely doesn't it!!

I'm not surprised that it's cheaper in India than central London. In hindsight it may have been better to have spent the difference on flights and accomodation and gone over there for the treatment. Bit of a trek for the aftercare though!!

I got it done 8.5 years ago. Everything is still good. I used to have really bad eyes and they got me to 20/20. I do have some problems at night and with bright lights, but it was the best thing I have ever done!

Wavefront is supposed to reduce the chances of halos around lights at night, that's how they sold it to me at least.
