  • You're money's no good here.

I'm at work (no I'm not supposed to be posting).

I've just run across a bizarre provision in an apartment lease: "Under no circumstances shall rent be paid in case and cash shall not be considered to proper tender."

This isn't an issue in this case, and no one's brought it up. --but has anyone ever seen a privision like this before?? I know I haven't. It says on greenbacks: "Legal tender for all debts, public and private." How can a creditor say, "You can't pay me in cash."

It's because they don't fully trust the people that work for them. Much easier to steal cash in a place like that than a money order I guess. Kind of annoying for me though as it costs me .50 for a money order to pay the rent each month.

They might figure that "certain unsavory elements" would tend to have an all-cash income and pay only in cash, so such a provision would deter them from living there.
      Unbelievable!

So, you're saying that Republicans pay in cash while Democrats put everything on their credit cards?

It is more expensive to handle cash (loss, accounting, banks charge to deposit).

There are a few businesses around here that deal with the public, but do not accept cash (cell phone store, etc).

It's also a problem to have a lot of cash on hand - small rental agencies would be constantly robbed. A place like the one down the block from me that has maybe 100 apartments around the city, if even 20 of them paid in cash that's $15,000 ... there are dozens of this type of place around the city, it would be easy to rob four or five of them. And you know exactly when to do it, also...

                DD is right.

My mom and dad got caught on this when they were building their house 40 years ago. They paid the crew cash and then the builder came to collect again.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I have never, ever known anyone, anywhere to pay their rent in cash. That's just weird.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Some businesses, such as law firms who handle client funds, aren't permitted to accept cash due to money laundering and/or tax avoidance laws.

you can set non-cash terms, that's what terms means. You can ask to be paid in bananas if you like. In fact someone on Apolyton probably will one day

                      How is ming paid anyway?

I would if they allowed it especially since they don't take credit cards there. Just give me a reciept and I'm happy.

Money order or checks (even out of state ones) are ok for me. I don't understand money orders. I have to get cash out with my debit card, but I can't use my debit card to pay for the money order. Because of this annoyance (nothing to do with ATM fees, I get 10 withdraws free), I pay the rent in checks.
