  • What are good graphic cards around?

You know, the solid stuff that may be a little expensive but isn't insanely overpriced because geeks like insanely overpriced.

And are separate audio cards a thing of the past or something?

And 2 gigs RAM is where it's at nowadays, right? I also don't understand this dual core CPU stuff very well. I have a Pentium 4 3.20GHz ATM but I suppose it's a lot slower than those dual cores that at first sight seem to contain less GHz.

      What about this for 1,170€:

      - Intel® Viiv™ Core™2 Quad Core QX6600 Processor (2,40 GHz, 1.066 MHz, 8 MB cache)
      - Legitieme Windows Vista® Home Premium - Nederlands
      - Dellâ„¢ 19-inch breedbeeldflatpanel (SE198WFP) (zilver) - Europees
      - 16x DVD+/-RW-station
      - 256 MB nVidiaâ„¢ GeForce 8600GTS grafische kaart, 2.048 MB 667 MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2 x 1.024]
      - 320 GB [2 x 160 GB] Serial ATA RAID 0 Stripe harde schijf (7.200 rpm) met DataBurstâ„¢-cache, 16x DVD+/-RW-station
      - Geintegreerde Dolby 7.1 audio

Maybe I'll just get that one. Does it get your seal of approval?

It's not a very good time for video cards, with hardly any competition in the mid-range right now. ATI took a long time getting their current generation cards out, and so nVidia hasn't had to drop prices. Both camps seem to have forgotten to offer anything in the $150-$250 range, which has generally been where the best buys are at with past generations of cards.

If you can find an ATI X1950XT for ~$150 they're a good deal. (They've actually been going up in price lately though. I guess to fill that ~$200 void.)

The next step up is the nVidia 8800 GTS, at close to $300.

Those are really the only 2 cards I would consider buying myself. (I bought a X1950XT back in March in fact.) Things should pick up again soon hopefully.

Since memory isn't that expensive, I'd go for 4GB.

I'd take another display, Samsung SyncMaster 226BW 22'' seems like a good deal, goes somewhere around 400€. I can't imagine that Dell being much cheaper.

Couldn't tell you about the graphic card since I haven't followed them up for a long time, but it looks OK to me. Someone could prolly give you a better recommendation.

I wouldn't get 2 x 160GB disks. But I don't know what you do with your computer, I would definitely get 2x500GB at least. It doesn't bump the price up that much.

I don't know is that some kind of a sound card or what? PRocessor seems OK, what about the mobo? Make sure your mobo supports the processor and it doesn't hurt if it's been tested to work well with the graphics card as well.

So nVidiaâ„¢ GeForce 8600GTS is not a bang for the buck or...?

                Absolutely, great value for money.

Other than that, I wouldn't go for a first DirectX 10 generation video card.

The 8600 GTS is generally a bit slower than a X1950PRO or 7900GS, while it costs more.

Except for the fact that current mainstream operating systems can't use more than 3Gib, so 25% of the RAM will just sit there, wasted.

Why? Won't a 64-bit version of Linux (what I use currently) be able to use an address space with a size of 2^64 bytes?

Well he is going to have Vista, so if he has the 64-bit one, it will support 4GiB RAM and more.

Of course depends what kind of mobo (and processor) he'll have.

                            I'd say go for Vista 64, Q6600, 4GB ram, and a 8800 GTS. The 8800GTS is roughly 2x-3x as fast the 8600GTS or X1950XT.

Yes. Or 64 bit Vista. But I don't consider either mainstream.
