  • It's alive, and it's scary as hell.......

The above shows a robot which learns from its environment by building models of itself, and testing them out.

It's also hellishly scary when you first look at it - it looks so absolutely alive, yet so utterly alien. You even feel pity for it when one of its limbs is damaged, and it tries to walk, because it's really reminiscent of a crippled animal.

Its certainly non-human but hardly alien. Vaguely seacreature like it its early movements.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

This is a good thing to fear.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Still too clumsy to look alive. And I wouldn't fear something I could just pull the plug on.

That's the sort of thing that would crawl up your wazzoo while you're sleeping, wrap itself around your spinal cord and turn you into a zombee of the computer overlords.

Cool, reminds me of a Replicator from the Stargate Series

Maybe they should teach it to build copies of itself

I got a quote after posting the other day, something along the lines of,

-Today's robots are only capable of performing the very simplest of operations, such as 'Go left', 'Go right' and 'Build car'.
