The problem is that many people, once they get ahold of some statistics, turn their brains off.

Crime is a social problem whether the rates of it occurring are rising, falling, or static. However, making use of BCS stats out of context and without explanation in order to support an argument that crime rates are increasing is pretty shabby, wouldn't you agree? The genesis of the "evil Finn" concept- Evil, evil Finland

You know. With all the cop shows on television and sensationalist reporting of violent crime, even thought most countries' crime rate is steady or falling, makes me wonder if the people doing it aren't trying to get ridiculously authoritarian laws introduced.Only feebs vote.

like the recent move to increase the time terror suspects can be held without charge (after an attempt to do the same just two years ago was defeated), you mean? :/"The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.

although they're both examples of the government using people's fear of terrorism to introduce ridiculously authoritarian laws, rather than the fear of crime. still the same principle though."The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.

Without making judgement on the issue itself: Crime statistics are very unpredictable, everyone knows that. You'll never be sure if the rise or fall of the figures are a result of a drop or increase of criminal offences one hand or a rise or fall in the percentage of actual crimes reported to the police on the other.
If a gun goes of in the forest and there's no one there hear it, is it really making a sound?

It reminds me of that Michael Moore film where he has those clips of newsreaders describing the suspect, and notes that it looks very much like the same black guy is terrorizing the entire United States.
Crime is in many ways the price we pay for living in a free society. Extending prison sentences doesn't seem to work well (the US has ridiculous sentences and a high crime rate). The right seems to think that telling criminals to "JUST BEHAVE" and "STOP BEING SO IRRESPONSIBLE" is going to work. At least that seems the substance of their policies on crime.Only feebs vote.
