According to NPR, Greece sent all their aircraft to save Olympia and let villages burn.

i'm not following the news in detail, but somehow i doubt it. it's not such a big area, we'd have an accident if "all" the aircraft were in that area....

of course Olympia was given a high priority but that sounds like an exaggeration...

So, they are offering a reward of 1 million Euros to find the guys who started this?

                Now my maybe idiotic questions:

                1) cant this money be used to have a decent fire prevention strategy ?
                2) shouldn't this money be better spent on rebuilding Olympia and the villages ?

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

I would think that a million Euros would be a drop in the bucket for either of those purposes.

Plus, IIUC, a "decent fire prevention strategy" isn't easy. The forest fires in the Western US are at least partly the result of what people thought were fire prevention strategies.

But it is expensive as hell so not many are in service. Croatia only has a couple, but Italy, Spain etc., don't have many more, and they are all busy. Northern countries are cooler so they don't need those planes.
In fact Spain has send several CL-215 to Greece. Spain has a big fleet of these planes, there are 15 CL-215 being converted to Cl-415 (the turbine version) and curretly it is receiving 10 new CL-415 more for a total of 25 planes.

Iberian peninsule is an idoneal place for huge fires, very hot and dry, with many forests, very windy and with many mountains, and the Canadairs have been used very extensively since 1970s (so far seven have been lost in action). They are really irreplaceable.

But it's all those criminal illegals that sneak across the border. I guess when they're not able to set fires in their own country, they're seting fires in the country that they've gone to have a better life in.
