      Bull****.

After Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, bin Laden offered to help defend Saudi Arabia (with 12,000 armed men) but was rebuffed by the Saudi government. Bin Laden publicly denounced his government's dependence on the U.S. military ....

      • Dino, OBL was not attacking us while we were engaged in the effort to expel Saddam from Kuwait - he sat it out. That qualifies as tolerating our presence even if he denounced the Saudi gov't for relying on the US. The attacks started once Saddam was gone and we weren't. Your nitpicking aint even logical.

Vatican City is the "capitol" of Catholicism, Saudi Arabia is the "capitol" of Islam. An infidel army need not occupy Mecca to be on Muslim holy lands, I thought we'd learned that already.

Don't be obtuse. The capital of Islam is Mecca, there is no historical claim Saudi Arabia can make to the "holy land." Any muslim who thinks that is just as likely to think all muslim territory is "holy land."

Does that mean all Italy is the holy land? And what territorial version of Italy? Sicily, my holy land

              • you're the one being obtuse, OBL was angry about US troops in Saudi Arabia and you want to argue about how mad he should have been in comparison to Catholics angry over a Muslim army in their capitol? Jesus, you and Dino are nitpicking to the point of absurdity. Saudi Arabia is home to the various holy sites where Muhammed went on his journey to ascension - shrines mark his path and the land is considered sacred. Even Vatican City cant claim the prophet walked thru the city or Italy. But if it makes you happy, Catholics would be angry if a Muslim army occupied Italy and wouldn't leave after rendering assistance.

So, has USA left Saudi Arabia by now?
Dont know, but leaving SA only to move into Iraq (and Iran) aint gonna help.

So we should have just paved over the Mecca mosque and built our barracks there then I guess, since it is all the same.

OBL was pissed eh? Well if a US soldier get within a hundred miles of Mecca every muslim would be pissed. It is not the same.

There as some Airforce personal at an airbase in Eastern Saudi Arabia, far away from Mecca.

No it aint all the same, they wouldn't have waited for us to expel Saddam from Kuwait if we were doing that.

Here's an idea, keep US soliders away from Mecca. Muslims tolerated our presence to remove Saddam from Kuwait but we overstayed our "welcome". And it doesn't have to be "the same" to be a valid analogy, the fact is both Catholics and Muslims would be pissed off. Is ignoring the obvious obtuse?

Dino, you're ignoring the context - either OBL isn't attacking us (he's tolerating our presence) or he is attacking us (he is not tolerating our presence). Dont pretend the context I provided doesn't exist and then replace it with your own, thats a strawman. And given your proclivity for shouting "Liar", its ironic too.

                      • Bush's comments were about on par for someone who got a C average in college. Maybe he should have paid more attention to current events instead of drinking. Well, at least his political success can be an inspiration to the privileged, well-connected, under-achieving children of the wealthy all across America.

Turkey is a NATO member. Does Turkey ever send troops to participate in NATO maneuvers? Have they ever sent troops to Italy inorder to participate in a NATO function? I'm willing to bet that at some point in the past 40 years they have, even if it was only some officers sent to observe. If so wouldn't that be sort of the equivalent to the presence of US troops in Saudi Arabia?

Okay, did the Vietnamese follow us home to kill us?

--- We must listen to our enemies, and they say our withdrawal from Iraq is our loss and their victory.

Why weren't we listening to them when they kept attacking us after leaving the army in Saudi Arabia? I mean, they just fought a war to expel the Russians and they start attacking our soldiers in Saudi Arabia...I detect a pattern.

--- The Khmer Rouge went on a murder spree because we left

Well, they actually started their cultural purge when we were bombing convoy routes within Cambodia, and it was the Vietnamese who went into Cambodia and ended the slaughter.

I thought the lessons of Vietnam were: dont prop up corrupt regimes if you have to bleed for them too. Dont get mixed up in civil wars. And dont let lying politicians scare us into foreign wars.

                            We didn't learn these lessons
We really need some mechanism for removing a grossly incompetent president. Sadly no one in Congress has the balls to push for a constitutional amendment.
