  • My Gran doesn't want to be American

My 84 year old Gran who was born in Detroit to UK parents and who moved back to the UK when she was 2 has been told she cannot enter the US on her British passport to see her Grandson get married.

She needs to go to the US embassy to get a US passport, she has never had a problem before in going to the US before on her UK passport.

It now seems the US authorities can't conceive of someone not taking them up on their kind offer of citizenship.

Now my Gran being a stubborn woman ( she was a fire watcher on the top of the bank of england during the blitz) has refused to comply with this and threfore won't be going to see her grandson marry.

If I can convince her the interview is a formality and she won't be traeted as a terrorist she might go along.

    Anyone know about this

Sounds like Uncle Sam is being pretty stupid. What's news about that?

I am sorry for your gran's trouble though. Seems they could refrain from being jerks to an 84 year old woman.

You might want to avoid telling her this but she already is one.

Yeah my brother got quite excited when we raelised that as he thought he might get US citizenship through descent. But he doesn't, although My Mum might. (although she is the most insular person in the world and thinks Scotland and Wales are alien places!)

Has she ever had a US passport before? Seems sort of strange.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

IMO, you Gran is being silly, and stubborn. I'm sure the interview is to make sure she ISN'T a terrorist, and will just be general questions. It's stupid paranoia on the US part.

I think the silliest part, however, is that she is going to let this formality get in the way of sharing in her grandson's special day. Stubborn? How about lazy. Sounds to me like it's just an excuse to not travel and get off her butt.

I'd have her contact the Foreign Ministry and see if she couldn't whip this into an international incident.

Is she a UK citizen? I think both parties are being ridiculous. If she wants to make this an issue, she should do it after the wedding, then let the gloves come off.

                      Isn´t there this question
"Are you planning to conduct terrorist acivity in the US"
in the form you have to fill if you want to get an US Visum?

Where there any people who have answered this question with "Yes" to date? And what was the reaction?

Probably but I don't think we recognize dual citizenship.

TheStinger: I don't know how it works but IIRC your gran (if she cared to and if your Mum wanted it) could apply to get your Mum American citizenship then once that got worked out years later (Rufus will correct me on that point I'm sure) your Mum could then start the process on your brother and you ( ).

We recognize dual citizenship, which I think is a mistake.
