You don't have to be an anarcho-hippy to be useful. I know plenty of rednecks who'd be able to survive catastrophe, and they actually have the means and the will to defend themselves if threatened.

There may be chaos for a while, but there are many groups that would work to restore order. Not only military and police but also firemen and construction workers, people who are used to building, not destroying. Eventually energy delivery would go to farms for tractors and rail for distribution. Many who are not used to real work would have to be retrained and if they are to high to get their hands dirty they would want for food which is the best of motivators.

I would find some clearings and plant potatos, then harvest as needed and before the rains come bring in the rest.

Here on the Oregon Coast heat is not really needed because of the Pacific thermal mass, warm clothes are enough.

I wonder how they get past emergency government dictates and get an economy going again though. All this buying overseas could be forgotten, we would have to make things again. That means having a hundred million people selling burgers and insurance to each other and claiming to be productive would have to be forgotten, but that's not really healthy or real anyway imo.

The trust in $ and banking and government would be gone, but potatos only fulfill for so long. That means getting things going again. Assigning value... tricky deal.
