  • Are you planning to work 80 years for the same company ?

It is of course her own shop, but still ?

Anyway, I wouldn't mind being so active if I get to that age - I would hate sitting in a chair looking out of the window all day long .

    Chip shop Connie's 100th birthday

This is her life, so she needed to be in the shop, even though it's her birthday

A 100-year-old woman has celebrated her landmark birthday by working at the fish and chip shop she opened nearly 80 years ago.

Connie Brown, who became an MBE last year, arrived at Brown's in Pembroke at 9am, as she does six days a week.

She and her late husband Sidney opened the Pembrokeshire cafe in 1928.

The steady stream of well-wishers during the day were offered a glass of wine and a piece of birthday cake along with their fish and chips.

Mrs Brown was taken to the nearby Lamphey Court Hotel for a birthday meal on Sunday, the only day in the week the shop is closed.

The great-grandmother of four said: "I'm overwhelmed with it all and can't believe I've reached 100.

"I am quite happy to work and I'll keep doing it until I can't work any more."

On a typical day, she arrives at 9am to cut up fish, works for an hour before going home, then returns at 11am to cook for customers until 2.30pm.

She then has another break before returning at 4pm to finish service for the day and close the shop.

Her husband died in 1964 at the age of 59, but the Main Street shop has remained a family concern.

Her daughter-in-law Glenys, 67, who helps run Brown's with her husband Hilton, 71, and son Steve, 44, said: "Everyone's been flooding in with cards and flowers. It's been wonderful.

"She's been trying her best to work as normal today. This is her life, so she needed to be in the shop, even though it's her birthday.

"Working keeps her going. If she was ever to stop, it would finish her.

"It keeps her mind active, and it's her routine."

We're the internet generation. We won't be ordinary pensioners once we hit BlackCat's age.

I see myself flaming newbies and trashing online adversaries well into my 90s...

Especially if you already are half the way down

That's an interesting thought because it forces the question of what the internet will be like after all those decades.

I assume there will be some kind of core network of some sorts, but how we can actually use it should be very exciting. This business is booming exponentially and the future looks very bright, lots of industry and people working for it so we're going to see major steps taken in the next decades.

I wonder what the navigation will be like. I bet it's more futuristic, like in futuristic films or similar.

Pekka, while your thoughts about the internet is quite interesting, it's a bit off OT. Please elaborate about the concept of still working at your 100 year birthday and at the same place for 80 years

There's no chance I'd work for a same company for 80 years unless it's mine or ... it has to offer pretty nice things and make me feel good. I guess it's nto out of the question, but it's not something I'd prefer by default.

80 years working at the same place...yikes, that is a scary prospect.

                              Well done.

Reminds me of the saying about people that have a job to do generally get up and do it. Retirement kills.
