    I wouldn't take rural American cuisine over rural French cuisine, and I wouldn't take urban American cuisine over urban French cuisine. They are pretty much two completely different approaches to food, so a nice job of fallacious inference there.

    Let's see. If you go to a French restaurant anywhere outside France, you are almost certain to be enjoying a gourmet meal. On the other hand, if you eat at an American restaurant, chances are you are partaking of la malbouffe.

    Um... yeah. It's called Slow Food. I'm surprised you never heard of it. It's one of the new conspicuous consumption obsessions of the very wealthy, and one of the biggest trends in food in the last 20 years. Doesn't do much for me, though.

    I would have thought you would have been more tuned in to the habits of the bobos.

      Yes, but it's all imported. Britain's contributions to world food can be summarized as: Spotted Dick; Bovril; mushy peas; and pork pies. If you go north of the border, you can enjoy the delights of haggis, which is basically the contents of a septic tank mixed with sawdust (and smells just like that).

      Britain is the world's home of horrible food. When my Dad was growing up there, most people preferred the taste of tinned peas to fresh ones.

      No wonder when Asian people immigrated, that they turned their noses up at the **** passing as food in Britain and turned everyone on to their food with the result that curry is now the favourite meal in Britain.

      If you have a limited palatte, France is good (say, you only like European food, maybe some West African, Vietnamese and Algerian food), but it's hard to beat the US in sheer variety. Immigrants
      Again, it's all imported. Where is the American food? All your best stuff you stole from the Mexicans. A lot of the rest reminds me of that episode of the Sopranos, where Tony takes his gang to Italy and they ask for Macaroni and tomato sauce.

      No doubt you can find a good Chinese restaurant in France, just as you have always been able to in the South Pacific. But that's not the point: this is not the food that people normally eat (unless they are a recent immigrant).

        What has to do with France economic/politic model?

        It is not the contrary; in rural france; where mainly the traditionalist, catholics and nationalist are living that people want to go?

                      Not at all... you said that the reason they move to the French countryside is because of the cuisine (among other reasons). Well, the cuisine is as good, if not better, than in urban America. So why move to the French countryside for cuisine?

                      Bull. Hardly anyone moves to the French countryside for "slow food". So they can go and pick out their own local cheeses from the small country market.... a few eco-freaks may, but few wealthy folks are going to move to be close to the organic local food.

                      Considering the Slow Food movement has only 83,000 members worldwide (according to wiki) with 35,000 of those in Italy itself, and most are probably eco-freaks, I'm doubting more than a handful of those have moved to the French countryside to partake.

                          Opps. The American middle class has been eroding for the past quarter of a century. It's the richest Americans who have been doing well. The economic conditions of almost everyone else is stagnating or declining.

                              I agree. That's why I said upper middle class. I wouldn't call lawyers, advertising executives and other assorted scum ( ) upper class.

                                Most of it hasn't been here (or in the UK) for centuries, but I don't see how that has anything to do with the quality of the food. It certainly doesn't matter to me. If you're only interested in generic fast food, you're missing out...

                                And I'm not saying that everyone in the US is eating great food. But it's there for anyone who wants it. Paris has a much more limited variety of good food than NYC.

                                I had a $2 bahn mi for lunch, and am gonna get some Thai green curry for dinner. Food in Houston.

                                Again, it's all imported. Where is the American food?
