This was in the 80's. The dogs are probably dead by now. We only had about 1 year of subscription.

I'm sure they all think they're above average.

My old natty guard unit thought it was fairly bad actually.

There's indeed such a saying from the 1920s-30s when there was an effort then to bolster a Turkish identity as opposed to the by-then bygone Ottoman identity, also to give people morale for the loooong hard work ahead to build the country from virtual scratch. But by now, it's only quoted tongue-in-cheek, say, when you want to complain about something wrong in the country, as a kind of mock-self reassurance

By the way, you don't actually shout stuff in the morning when you arise in the army, but during marches and runs to mark your step. Things like "Every-Turk's-Born-a Soldier!", "Everything's-For-the Motherland!".

The funniest one was "Pull-Pin-Throw-Grenade!". I guess they want to emphasise the right order of things

I ordered spetznaz once, floppy noodles.

No really, didn't the Russians lose most of those guys fighting elite Afghan sheep herders?

Nice story Ancyrean. What about dirty/nasty songs, have any of those for marching? One of ours:

                    A yellow bird
                    With a yellow bill
                    Landed on
                    My windowsill

                    I lured him in
                    With a piece of bread
                    then I smashed
                    His ****in head

Yeah, in the 80's, they did that just for sports. Swam ashore from a submarine, walked 70 km across dry land in a quite densely populated area, patted our evil dogs on the head and scratched them behind the ear, then climbed the radar mast and spray painted "Igor was here" on the antenna.

                      NOT!

There are a lot of units that don't fool themselves that they are any good.
I know that my unit when I was in the army was not trained well enough and had mediocre equipment.

actually, Spetznaz and VDV ( Russian Airborne ) fared very well against the afghans. All light infantry did. It was the mechanized forces that suffered heavy casualties. All units suffered from rather low morale, though.
