i think the reason that boris johnson appeals to people, is that unlike most other politicians, everything he says isn't some sanitized, politically correct claptrap, that's been through a dozen focus groups to make sure that it doesn't offend anybody. he just comes out and says what he thinks.

an intelligent man who speaks his mind, there's a lot to be said for that.

Yep, that about sums it up nicely.
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

If Boris is really as bad at offending people (not just minorities either - just look at his comments about Liverpool and Portsmouth) as claimed, it would be doubtful that he would ever become mayor of London.

While I find Boris amusing and a refreshing change from most other politicians I really don't think he should be given a position of power or influence.

My suspicion is that will be the attitude of most folk and his candidature will just fade away.

If he gave the impression of actually giving some thought to what he says, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

As it is, he just appears to blurt out the first feeling that pops into his head with all the tact and diplomacy usually associated with street drinkers.

Just make him deputy PM then.

It's not that. It's that he's really the only honest Tory. By and large the rest of them are the same stuffed shirts with the same antedeluvian views as him, although they don't have the gumption to be honest about it.

Johnson is the perfect representative of the petty, low grade evil that is the distinguishing mark of the British Conservative Party (the mentality that wants to bring back the right of landowners to flog trespassers, and wants to cut the heating allowances of the elderly).

People hate the diabolical totalitarian kind of evil, but most people enjoy having a laugh at the petty, bumbling, antiquarian evil that Johnson represents (in full awareness of his own hypocrisy).

How would you tell the difference between Boris and Red Ken (who London seemed to love) then?

I voted for Ken in both elections, not because I love him, but because I respect him and think that he can get things done. Political compromise also means that he doesn't do anything ridiculous.

Also you had to compare him to the other runners who didn't seem to want the job - first time round Dobson was forced to run for Labour and he made it clear he didn't want to, second time Ken got the Labour go ahead. Norris's campaigns never seemed to start due to apparent apathy on his part. As for Lib Dems, they didn't supply a credible or likeable candidate on either occasion.

I can't speak for others, but that is my general understanding of why people voted for Ken.

Boris could stir things up, but Ken would be more likely to win because when it comes to it, Boris doesn't look like a man who would get things done.

Fair enough. At least the Tories have a chance of winning. Unlike the Scousers.

I don't think either of us will be winning much for the next couple of years....it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
