The problem with some form of "branding" is that "sex offender" is a very broad category. IMO people who got sentenced for violating a statutory rape law (say an 18 yo got caught having consensual sex with his/her 15yo BF/GF) should not be treated in the same way as a repeat child rapist.

Sure, I suppose. But since having a sex offender sit in jail for ten or twenty years isn't likely to fix the massive psychological problems he has, why would we even bother releasing him to test if he's rehabilitated or not?

Maybe we should actually develop a system that actually does, er, you know, attempt to rehabilitate sex offenders?

AFAIK there is no treatment for pedophiles short of castration.

As for the thread topic, on the surface it seems unreasonable but unlike the frothing knee-jerk liberals (and you know who you are) I'll wait till I know more.

Beats me why Ramo is so concerned about child molesters. If he was the parent of the child who was molested he might not be quite so upset over the treatment of the molester.

Ramo isn't concerned about child molesters per se. he is concerned with laws that lead to more arrests based on a catch 22s for offenders that have been deemed fit for release.

Again, if he isnt a danger why all the laws that prevent him from living in certain places?

If he is a danger why did we release him?

I very very much agree. But the law treats them the same if they ge tconvicted (And often it isn't even brought into the court room for statutory rape, we can't have something often be OK, but sometimes ruin your life).

This law and its application is prima facie irrational. It's exactly the kind of thing that is easy to pass (vote against and you're "soft on pedophiles") and virtually impossible to change legislatively, essentially for the same reason.

If there's virtually nowhere to legally live in Augusta, it's easy to imagine a town laid out to make the residence of a law-abiding offender illegal. This is discrimination. Remember, this guy was convicted in 1994, has done his time, and has no outstanding warrants related to pedophilia (surely they would have come to light).

It's up to the courts to fix this. God help us all.

Of course there's not, because who the **** cares about curing pedos?

Emotional gut reactions and uncivilized desires for "eye-for-eye" retribution should have no basis in a civilized penal system. It should be, ideally, rehabilitation, and, if that is not possible, to segregate the offenders from the rest of the community.

Couldn't we just plant small video cameras in their heads and watch everything they do? Better yet include a penile erection meter and a defibrillator with leads buried in the scrotum. If the penile meter reads impending penile tumescence and the video shows the offender oogling a kid then the probation officer zaps him in the sac with the defibrillator. Eventually he or she gets cured.

Sex offender registration laws of any sort are immoral and unconstitutional. I don't suppose the prohibition of double jeopardy has been stricken from the constitution, has it?

Thank god we have states like Georgia to remind the rest of us exactly WHY sex offender registration is immoral and unconstitutional. Maybe someone one of these days will wise up as a result of this and actually get these laws overturned...

Georgia’s law is not the only one that has made it hard for offenders to maintain legal residences. In Florida, the state authorized five offenders to live under a bridge in Miami after they were unable to find suitable housing that they could afford.
