  • How do you open and end your emails?

I'm just curious how you all open and end your emails before sending it?

For opening I would just put "Dear" if the person is a high flyer and I don't know them well. And "Hi" if the person is on par with me or is more of a friend business partner - even if a high flyer.

And for the end, I just put "- Dan" and below that is our company footer with contact details and logo.

I hate being formal and crap, I feel fake, so I try to keep my emails nice and simple. I don't want to kiss up to anyone, but I also don't want to be unfriendly.

I usually just start talking about whatever I think is relevant and stop when there's no more relevant things to say. I do not sign it because quite frankly if the recipient is not smart enough to see who is sending him emails, he is not worth my time or effort and should be dealt with accordingly. Then there are old asses like people who you work for or your mother and you desperately want to be formal...I attach my john hancock digiitally to these emails by means of signing my name, along with a random quote from the simpsons to deflect any criticism of the contents of the email itself. also, if the subject of the email is my ex-girlfriend, let us just say I attach pictures.

I start with the addressee's given name and end with my own.

I don't put anything. They know who they are and who I am. So tough.

If it is an official email, I write it like a letter, with the German pendants of official opening and ending phrases (I rarely send official emails abroad).

If it's private, I open with "hello" or "hi" and close with J., which is the initial of my first name.

I send "official" emails everyday. I open with the recipient's name unless I'm in the middle of an exchange with them and close with a prefab signature block that Lotus Notes applies to all of my emails.

God, what a boring subject for a thread.

The people with whom I exchange emails are not always as professional as I am. I often receive email responses that look something like:

thx for the copy wil get back to you soon -bill

I love it. I guess that's why the government needs technical writers like me.

Usually I start with the person's name or, if multiple people "hello all" or somesuch. I often sign it with my first name, although that's redundant at work because my work email has an sig set up that has all my info. But I'm redundant here at 'poly too, so why change?

                              Usually "Hi!" and " -Nikolai".

In Norway we are pretty informal, only the king you MUST adress formally. And for letters, you are only formal in business letters and such, and then you don't use "dear" for obvious reasons.
