      Yes, basically it is down to the silica content...

      Generally speaking the more 'landward', or established a volcano, the more silica it contains, the more viscous it is, the steeper the gradient of the volcano and the more dangerous it is to humans...

        IIRC from geology class, the Hawaiians even have different names for different types of lava. The kind that dries into ropy lumps is pahoehoe, while t'other is a'a. Or something like that.

            I didn't visit this thread yesterday, since I was sure it wouldn't be worth it, the title being very obvious on what it really was all about. But here it still are, and on top of that with lots of postings by rah. And really, I applaud you Plato, very well done.
