Other than a company that apparently needs better security policies.
I got a letter from this place telling me my checking account information had been stolen from them. It sounds like it wasn't enough to cause major damage, name, an incorrect address and phone, and the last 4 digits of the MICR number on my checks, but I'm just annoyed that this company I've barely heard of is keeping records on me with that sort of information. I mean, I've seen their logo before, but I couldn't have told you what they did until I got this letter...yet, they apparently have enough information on me to allow somebody to do a pretty thorough job of identity theft. Yay fun.
I'd really love to see some sort of data retention and mining laws passed. Just because I give Best Buy or whoever a check doesn't mean I authorize them to do anything but trade it for cash, much less give it to a third party that dumps all the information on it into a database with a four-character password. Marketers shouldn't be allowed to barter such information if it comes to them, either...but I know that's far too much to ask.
In closing,
