The company I used to work for had its European office in southern Germany. Everyone there had grown up with American soldiers and their families as part of their lives, and were genuinely fond of them. Many Americans would marry locals, often settling there even after leaving the service. I retain a number of close friendships with locals there, despite having left the company over 2 years ago.

The reaction of the townsfolk in the article strikes me as quite genuine.

Germany is a rich country with 80 million people. So the economic contribution of a few American divisons is negliable. And the US military doesn't buy very much local supplies, they get most of it from home. Hey, they even drive around in American cars! What's wrong with Mercedes and Porshe?

This article has some moronic US chest-thumping bias - Miami Herald? I belive it when I read it in a German newspaper...

It's much the same reactions in towns in the States when a base closes, why would it be different in Germany?

You better start reading the local German papers then...

It's true. Those US troops have been there over 60 years now and are part of the local community. Where do you think they drink their beers on their nights out?

In the long run their economic impact is small but small towns will suffer.
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
            Once again...

After the war I'd bet half the German economy was based on allied forces. Now they can poopoo about the contribution. That's good, but it also means you can't get laid there for a chocolate bar anymore, so we're leaving.

Nothing like a prolonged occupation to make a country love you.

It started with chocolate bars in '45. By 47 it was a pair of nylons. Now it's a thousand euros. That's inflation.

Exactly. Just look at the Poles, Estoians, Czechs and other Eastern European peoples. It was embarrasing how they were behaving as the Russians left their countries. One could literally feel the love.

Seriously though, I'm sure there have been both strains and genuine bonds created by so many Americans in the country. It's good that the relationship is evolving.
