    ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has reinstated former Chief Justice Iftikar Chaudhry on Friday. This move has come as a big blow for President General Pervez Musharraf as he had ordered his suspension in March 9 for Chaudhry's alleged misconduct including nepotism and securing unwarranted privileges.

    A 13 member bench set aside Musharraf's order and decided to reinstate Chaudhry. This was historic judgment and first in Pakistan's history. This decision will have a deep impact on Pakistan's politics as elections are knocking at the door.

    After the judgment was pronounced there was lot of jubilation among lawyers and people of Pakistan.

    Earlier, the government had watered down charges against Pakistan's chief justice, which was another setback for president Musharraf in a case that threatens his political future.

            FYI, Chaudhry has been looking into the "disappearances" of Musharraf opponents. So that's going to continue. Meanwhile, the major Pakistani parties (excluding Bhutto's PPP) have recently formed a pro-democracy alliance. This really looks like the beginnings of revolution.

              Legal experts are of the opinion that the judgement marks a watershed in Pakistan's legal history and will have far reaching implications for the rule of law in the country.

              "The country has been reborn today," said an emotionally charged Ali Ahmad Kurd, one of the lawyers who represented the chief justice. "Until today it was a body without a soul."

              The message for the government of Gen Musharraf is not even remotely comforting.




              I wonder if it is as big a deal as it's being made out to be.
